Just had a successful tutorial with Nick. We were looking at my grid system work for portraits and he made the suggestion that the grids with which I am drawing in are the canvases. A really good idea. I told him about my ideas for airbrushing and he suggested I get one, and experiment with it, so Im gonna start looking for one. Im going to get down to the national a portrait gallery and get some more inspiration from the old dutch masters, so that I can have an idea of what I want my work to materialise into. PLus I need to find some Chuck Close heads somewhere.

Interesting guy.

At first I wondered what I was doing in room 304 for this artist talk as soon as his loud show reel played. I didn't get a good love at the video because I was so concerned with shielding my ears from the noise. Looking around there were a few grimacing faces. I kept on.

Keith Harrison a ceramist who often does performance pieces, has a reputation, hearing baout causing fires on all sorts at other galleries.

His work often involves cooking clay, electricity plays a big part in his work, I found this a interesting cohesion of materials. I loved his sketches and doodles he was showing, they were possibly my favourite part of the whole talk. His drawing using copper wire of Carl Marx was interesting, as im always on the look out for new ways of drawing, altough i dont practice them, im very interested in them. This worked displayed at MIMA and then in London at the Gooden Gallery last year.

His 21 ovens, casts from the inside of the ovens were in colour coding like the last supper displayed at the VNA off all places was a revelation as to the open minded people out, I just loved sein this different coloured ovens among priceless pantings owned by the queen.

Interviews

I had an awesome experience helping to conduct the interviews for prospective students of Interactive Arts. Like last year Im pretty sure it was a third year helping Hazel to interview me. And it was very useful, how you might ask, well I had a mind set as if I was a tutor conducting the interviews, having my very responsible head on. As Hazel told the potential new students "we want to know about you" which I thought at the time of my interview was an interesting take on this whole process. I enjoyed being on the other side of this thing, I felt myself wanting to know more about each student. Most of them were talented but 3 of them really stood out for me. Only then talking to these guys about the course had i realised just how fortunate i am to be on this course. So I've been working hard and doing a lot more research recently, something i have neglected my whole life. So all in all a very good experience.

Arnie's mummies paintings

On the 3rd of amrch a load of us went to Mrs. Arnie Pollacks exhibition at The Portico Library and Gallery. According to the leafleft and postcard's i took from the exhibition, the paintings were produced over the last 30 years. My opinion was that they had a dystopian future look to them, which i really liked, it felt like a 60's view of the english country in 1999. Cool night actually, saw some art and drank loads with my mates on the course, something ive not done enough of. STart of a very good few weeks.

A very interesting painter, remins my janney saville, the bursh control mainly. I was looking for the artist who did the small paintings of nudes in the film Synecdoche New York,because I'm doing a series of drawings on a very small scale, and paintings. Bceause of the detail and skill required, and it fits in with my idea of copies, which is my new porject. Work things i have made that are copies, what they warrent.

The lecture was held in Manchester University, and I have to say, I have no idea what the Professors or the research students were talking about. From what I could decipher is that Damian O'Doherty used the city of Manchester as a sort of randomiser, using it to explore new parts of the city. I forget what word was used, but using maths it was determined that this word would be attached to the map of the city. The coordinates from where the lines hit the map would be used to explore the cities various boroughs and what not. It took Damian on a journey where he would have to see a city thats is fragile. The words Anthropology is often brought up, I guess the study of humanity, what I could tkae from this is that Damian was using the Urban to see the human.

I went to Leeds College of Art and Design to assist in a Alice and Wonderland themed photo shoot. I was there for a full days, observing, what is often a glamourised job. Its hard work and like mentioned a long and difficult process. Most of your ideas don't work so you have to be able to engage with others on how to overcome those difficulties.
The idea was to produce a sinister take on the alice and wonderland story, which is obvious dark overtones, here its a bit more obvious with the model being stalked by the shadow. It was improvised and definitely the most successful idea. The model posed as if she was about to be attacked by the monstrous hands. It was my idea to have the model sitting on the chair, sitting comfortably and unaware of the impending doom. The colourful projection didn't work as the photographer wanted because the shape and size of the projection compared to the shape of the cove didn't fit. It was interesting to see how lighting was set up and the camera used,. I have forgotten the name o the camera but i will sort that out soon, it did cost £10,000.

Table Review

The table review was interesting, its not what i thought it was, which is probably because I over think and always assume the worst of situations. Its not as formal or invasive of our work, which is good. Most people around me had full on finished pieces and and "palpable" work. I had two sketch books with ideas, just ideas, pictures and drawings of experiments. The reception to this was positive not only from Nick but from other students who understood and liked my ideas. This ties in with my belief that im going to try to enjoy this first year and experiment.

Allison Schulnik

Some of the most impressive painting I have seen in years, Allison Schulnik work reminds me of the work by Lucian Freud, the violence and care she has taken in every brush stroke. The characters are very unusual, many of her paintings have this negative energy emanating from the canvas, this is not a bad thing, its another corner of the art world located and answered. Its feels very indulgent, insular, I guess art is an indulgent act, and theres a sense she revels in the continually worked brush strokes.

Check out her clown series, very interesting.

The Great Egg Race

During an important tutorial explaining my egg drop response to 'food' Hazel directed me to The Great Egg Race, a BBC show broadcasted in 1985. It was hosted by Professor Heinz Wolff and showed contestants trying to solve problems using apparatus given to them. Its not so much the title which lends itself to my egg response, its what the show represents. The idea of using objects in my environment to solve a problem; the problem being how to protect an egg from a great height.

Arnulf Reiner

While working on my journal I stumbled across Arnulf Reiner, I had looked at his work earlier this year and i was really impressed by it, so impressed with it that I'm going to put him in my journal, stick those photos in my book and say how good he is. In the current climate that I have discovered that is contemporary art, I think he fits in quite well. The sudden violence and the gore that come with the colour and the strokes and marks are awesome.

A painting I produced a while ago. Its called "Ghost" I took a few photographs of some family members their portraits in various positions. i had no plan of how i was going to paint it or ay clear image oon how it would look, I painted for about 20 hours and this is the final result. Its one of my favourite paintings that I've done, Im very critical of my work, maybe overly so.

I am currently studying a degree in Interactive arts at MMU. This is an extremely self-driven and theoretical course. I relish a challenge but keep my calm in difficult situations. Previous experience has helped me become a good team player and I’m willing to step out of the box to do provide the best kind of service that customers deserve. The Cornerhouse attracts a broad range of people including art enthusiasts such as myself who I can find myself relating to, a reason that excites me about the prospect of a job with this company. EMPLOYMENT/ WORK EXPERIENCE

Gallery Assistant FACT Liverpool 2008-2009

My duties at FACT included gallery prep in the morning and watching over the gallery spaces throughout the day including being responsible for the days activities. I became familiar with different artists and their exhibitions in the gallery. This knowledge meant I could offer information to the public when needed. I was also an events assistant when needed, here I performed many tasks such as de-rigging stages and lighting or just being available to the events manager. I additionally worked on the information desk and was available to help with Picture House cinema.

It was here where I learnt my trade behind the bar. I sensitively and promptly dealt with the different and sometimes stressful situations that come with working in a bar area. I learnt the various types of drinks and gained some knowledge of wine. I learnt to take stock, work the bar’s till and to see that all the machinery was kept clean and running.

In the kitchen I learnt to prepare various sweet dishes and prepare food for the chef. This role helped me to gain confidence and become responsible for my own actions.

Brains Storming and all its little bits

This was given to us in our third week, the title food and we have to run with it. This is the first thing most of us did, this is the most simple and effective ways of ideas generation. As you can see I have come up with a few negative words, which have proved fruitful. I wont lie though, i have struggled so far in terms of physical manufactures. My problem is that i have so many ideas in my head at once I find it hard to know where to start, I want to make a documentary then a painting etc.............

Michael Howards lecture on Monday 26th had been inspiring. His talk on Leonardo Da Vinci generated very specific and exciting ideas, I was there for the exhibition a about 6 months ago in the Manchester Art Gallery and they were the most beautiful drawings, this is the route i want to take. Some of this drawings remind of the flesh of friuit, how it peels and has layers of tissue. Careful and dramatic studies of this would be appropriate for me.

Sweeded Movie: Hudsucker Proxy

This was the second week of Interactive Arts, and it was going pretty damn well. Have you seen Bekind Rewind? Well its this awesome film by Michel Gondry where Jack Black and erases all the videos tapes in Mos Defs store because he become magnetised (love the fantastical elements) In doing so together they decided to "swed" the erased movies, recording their versions of the films onto the blank tapes. If you have not seen it then go out and buy it, its charming and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

group had to sweded Hudsucker proxy, a bizarre Coen brothers film starring Paul Newman, Tim Robbins and Jennifer Jason Leigh, good film, very bizarre. AMAZING project, we ended up going over our 2 minute limit but was well worth it, especially for our death scene, where yours truly jumps out the 7th floor window to a large thud, possibly causing concern amongst the gentiles on the street. Hoping to get it up on youtube soon (arnie!) so you can all have a good look. In the mean time take a look at another groups sweded version of Independance day!
